Cristobal moving into Missouri with heavy rainfall

Cristobal has once again weakened into a tropical depression, and the third-named storm of the year is making its way further inland.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Cristobal's center made landfall in southeast Louisiana Sunday evening.

As of the National Hurricane Center's 4 a.m. update, Cristobal is moving into Missouri with heavy rainfall expected to spread northward through the middle and upper Mississippi Valley and western Great Lakes on Tuesday.

Cristobal is 80 miles east-southeast of Springfield, Missouri. The storm is moving north at 25 mph. Maximum sustained winds are at 30 mph.

This sets a new record for the earliest third named Atlantic storm formation. The previous record was June 5, set in 2016. That is when Colin formed. So far in 2020, Arthur and Bertha have already formed.

NHC says Cristobal is expected to gain some strength as it becomes an extratropical low Tuesday night and Wednesday.
