The Quarterback Battle: Tom Brady & Patrick Mahomes

Someone will make history tonight in a Super Bowl so filled with storylines it would fill a season of TV programming. Tom Brady, already the true Game of Thrones king, going for a seventh ring. Patrick Mahomes, the apparent heir to the quarterbacking summit, seeking a second in a row with Kansas City — something no team has done since Brady led New England to the double in the 2003 and ’04 seasons. Brady is in his 10th NFL title game, but with a new outfit, the Buccaneers — who happen to call Tampa home. Yes, Tampa, Florida, where the Super Bowl is being played this year.

Chiefs arrive just over 24 hours before big game

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs touched down in Tampa Bay around 4 p.m. Saturday. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL had teams delay traveling into the host city until Friday at the earliest as a safety and health precaution measure. The Chiefs instead chose to come on Saturday, repeating their itinerary from earlier in the season when they beat Tom Brady and the Bucs 27-24 on Nov. 29.

Who is performing at halftime:

The Weeknd is headlining the halftime show this year. Other supplementary performers have not been announced yet, and neither have details about The Weeknd’s song selections for the performance. The Weeknd says he’ll be using different parts of the stadium, including the pirate ship.

What is confirmed: Amanda Gorman, the poet who stole the show at the inauguration, will participate in the pregame show. Miley Cyrus will also have a performance during the pregame festivities.

H.E.R. will be performing “America the Beautiful” at the Super Bowl, and Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan will pair up to sing the national anthem.

Which commercials to watch:

Or not watch. Budweiser has become the latest company to say they will not advertise during the game. Instead, the beer company says they will join a public awareness campaign for the COVID-19 vaccine. This is the first time in 37 years Budweiser will not air their commercials, according to Anheuser-Busch.

Pepsi, Coke and Hyundai have previously said they will take a step back from advertising in this year’s game. Pepsi will still sponsor the halftime show.
