Tampa Bay area schools cancel field trips involving air travel in wake of coronavirus concerns

TAMPA, Fla. -- As the world continues to monitor the coronavirus outbreak, three Tampa Bay area public school districts are canceling their field trips involving air travel.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

The Hillsborough County Public Schools announced on social media the district will be canceling "all planned school-sponsored trips outside the State of Florida for district-operated schools [if] they involve air travel." In-state field trips are still allowed but like all other school field trips, the district will need to approve each trip.

PINELLAS COUNTY

Pinellas County Schools announced on social media it will cancel all air travel outside of Florida. The district will be reviewing all out-of-county trips.

POLK COUNTY

The Polk County Public Schools also decided to suspend all student field trips involving air travel on Tuesday.

"District and school staff members will work with parents and travel companies to make appropriate cancellation arrangements," the school district said on its social media page.

For university students in the Sunshine State, several universities announced changes for their study abroad plans. The University of Tampa relocated a summer trip from China to Singapore.

The University of South Florida stated it does not have any organized study abroad programs in China. It stated, "Out of an abundance of caution, the university has temporarily suspended all university-related travel to China for students and faculty."
