TAMPA, Fla. — As we endure the hottest week of the year, entering Memorial Day weekend, here are some quick tips to save some money on your electric bill.

Air Conditioning

Yes, you'll need your air conditioner to survive the heat, but Florida Power and Light recommends setting the thermostat fan to "auto," and to keep it no lower than 78 degrees.

Now I understand, that doesn't sound very cool; however, for every degree 78 and over you set it, you could save 6% to 8% off your bill.

Ceiling Fans

Regarding your ceiling fans, always turn them off when you leave the room. If you have pets it might be better to keep them on. FPL says a fan that runs all of the time costs up to $7 per month.

Water Heaters

Your water heater is a cost you may not think about. Most people spend around $20 per month to heat water. Lowering the temperature by 10 degrees can knock off 3% to 5% of your energy costs and off set any extra expenses you may incur cranking up the AC this summer.
