VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 3-year-old boy has passed away after accidentally shooting himself with a handgun on Wednesday.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office said that the shooting was reported at home on Nectarine Road in Daytona Park Estates around 6:22 p.m.

During a press conference on Thursday, Sheriff Michael Chitwood said the child found a handgun inside a nightstand in a bedroom.

When officials arrived, they performed CPR on the child, who had been shot once. He was taken to a local hospital, where he passed away.

Chitwood said that the child's sister, 16, and brother, eight, were both at home during the time of the shooting and that the teenager was supposed to be in charge of the children while the parents were grocery shopping.

According to officials, the toddler wandered into the bedroom and found the gun. While investigating, deputies found an inoperable safe in the same bedroom and a second gun on top of a refrigerator.

The name of the child has not been released yet, and no arrests have been made yet.
