HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLA — A Hillsborough County man has started a petition in hopes to see improvements along a busy road in the county completed sooner than later.

Ronald McIntyre said he has noticed major traffic issues along Big Bend Road near I-75.

“I’d like to see a dedicated on ramp going North and a better exchange coming off the ramp,” McIntyre said.

His petition has more than 290 signatures. He would like more lanes for drivers getting on and off 75 to alleviate traffic headaches not only on Big Bend Road but side streets as well.

“I want to see an accelerated urgent fix to the problem,” he said.

Hillsborough County Public Works staff and FDOT staff are working together on improvements in the area. There are plans to fund several improvements specifically on Big Bend Road and I-75, including widening Big Bend Road. Construction for those particular projects would not begin for about 3 years.

“They got to do something. It’s just bad. I mean really bad,” Debbie Smedegaard said.

FDOT confirms there are plans, down the road, to add more ramps on and off 75 from Big Bend. According to the county, the county has partially funded that project; it is part of a bigger 10-year future plan that includes other construction projects in Hillsborough County.

McIntyre said he hopes his petition will catch the attention of the people making the decisions.

“I think the more people we have signing the petition, the more the politicians will listen,” McIntyre said.
