The Tampa Police Department is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that happened Sunday morning.

On Sunday, at approximately 11:47 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of North 11th Street and West Hillsborough Avenue following reports of an overturned vehicle.

Upon their arrival, officers found two people in the overturned convertible: the driver, a Black man in his late 70s, and the passenger, a Black woman in her late 70s.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. Officials said he did not exhibit signs of impairment.

Investigators determined that the vehicle was traveling westbound on East Hillsborough Avenue, in the inside lane, near North 12th Street.

Officials said that the vehicle then veered from the left side of the roadway for unknown reasons.

The vehicle came to a rest on its roof after striking a utility pole just south of North 11th Street.

East Hillsborough Avenue was closed in both directions from North Nebraska Avenue to North 15th Street for over three hours. All lanes have since reopened.
