VENICE, Fla. — Troopers are investigating a hit-and-run crash involving a teenager on US-41 and Short Dr. in Venice.
They say Zach O’Bry was crossing US-41 when a maroon SUV struck him. The driver of the vehicle left the scene around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
“They basically treated my son like he was roadkill, like a squirrel that ran out in front of a car. How do you not have enough conviction to stop?” said mother Roberta O’Bry.
She said her son moved to Florida just a few weeks ago for a fresh start.
“He wanted to start a life of his own and was happy about it, but was very homesick,” said O’Bry.
The vehicle is described as a 2000-2005 Ford Expedition (ED Bauer) with front damage. It is dark maroon or red in color with possible tan trim.
Troopers are encouraging any witnesses to contact their office.
