VENICE, Fla. — A group of bicyclists packed the Sarasota County Commission Chambers on Wednesday afternoon. They were requesting that lawmakers take a look at safety on Center Road.

Last week, four bicyclists were hit by a 91-year-old driver on the stretch of road.  Three of the cyclists are still recovering.  William Harrison died this week from his injuries.

“We are all devastated by this,” said neighbor Pat Abde.

Several speakers told commissioners to lower the speed limit on Center Road from 45 mph to 35 mph.  Commissioners said they will look at the issue in a later meeting.

Don Lacoste is in a bike club with Harrison.

“We consider ourselves family,” said Lacoste.

State troopers said the driver of the vehicle was not at fault, because the bicyclists made an improper lane change.

Neighbors said they still plan to fight for safety changes in honor of Harrison.

“I won’t give up, I’m going to continue fighting,” said Abde.
