Traffic engineers in Manatee and Sarasota counties are planning for the future of traffic. They are taking input from engineers and residents about what the roads should look like 20 years from now. Engineers said the population of the area will grow by more than 25 percent by 2040.

“We are looking for ways to make the existing system work better,” said traffic planner David Hutchinson.

He said the Sarasota-Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization is looking at three hot spots for traffic improvements. The three areas include the Desoto Bridge, US-41, and Anna Maria Island.

“We are looking at using water taxis on Anna Maria to help ease congestion,” said Hutchinson.

Robert and Jan Segal said they’ve noticed congestion increase on US-41.

“It’s getting more congested, it’s jammed all the way up,” said Jan Segal.

She would like to see more public transportation options.
