Sarasota County to offer residents free rides to hurricane shelters

Sarasota County leaders are preparing the upcoming hurricane season. They created a new transportation system to help residents get to shelters.

“We came up with a plan that would help every citizen from Englewood to Longboat Key,” Emergency Services Director Rich Collins.

Collins said the idea for the plan came after Hurricane Irma. He said county leaders realized there were some groups of citizens who had a hard time getting to a shelter.

The plan calls for seventeen pick-up points located throughout the county. Collins said a citizen can drive to the pick-up point, leave their vehicle, and take a bus to a shelter. He also said people can register online for a ride if they have no way to get to a pickup point.

Residents can register for a ride by going to www.scgov.net. Fill out this form to submit your request.
