SARASOTA, Fla. — Monica Worthington recently moved to Sarasota after finding out her mom, Irene, was sick.

“She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer,” said Worthington.

Irene didn’t have health insurance, so she waited three months after noticing symptoms to see a doctor. She eventually went to the Universal Crescent Clinic in Sarasota to get checked out.  A doctor at the clinic said Irene needed to go to a hospital immediately.

Clinic administrator Ruta Jouniari said she plans to keep this scenario from ever happening again.

“Had she caught it early, it was preventable, the fact that she is a mom with six kids, hurts,” said Jouniari.

She said they plan to open a women’s resource center. They’ll be offering free pap-smears and mammograms.

“We don’t want any other to have to leave their children,” said Jouniari.
