SARASOTA, Fla. — Before Derek Donovan became a stylist and the owner of Derek the Salon, he worked as a bartender for 12 years.
That's why Donovan says he empathizes with struggling servers.
Although his salon was closed for nine weeks during the shutdown, he says waiters, waitresses and bartenders had it even worse.
"They were down for much longer than we were," said Donovan.
So Donovan and his team decided to help. Donovan says they went to nearly every restaurant in Sarasota giving out 300 gift cards for free haircuts to restaurant servers.
"When you have a good hair day, your day is great! When you have a bad day, your day is off. So I’m just hoping they feel inspired to get back to work and get back to work feeling great," said Donovan.
Donovan says he hopes their act of kindness inspires others to have compassion and give to those who are struggling.
