SIESTA KEY, Fla. — A Siesta Key homeowner has until Friday to remove a fence on their beachfront property.

Last month, the homeowners at 3935 Shell Road in Siesta Key put up a rope fence blocking people from trespassing on what they say is their beach property.

On Jan. 9, Sarasota County sent the homeowners a letter saying the fence violates the county’s Coastal Setback Code.

The letter says by Jan. 24 they need to remove the post and rope fence.

But on Friday, the fence was still there and people on the beach were not happy about it.

"They have a problem and I can understand the problem they have but it's hurting the general public," said Anthony Sellitto, who comes to Shell Road Beach often.

Since July, there have been nearly 100 calls to the sheriff's office from 3935 Shell Road for trespassing and other illegal activity.

Sarasota County says if the fence is not removed, the homeowners could face fines.
