MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — A Manatee County mother and father were arrested on Wednesday after a toddler was hospitalized with drugs in his system.
Kierstyn Lapek, 23, and Devon Barendse, 28, were arrested and charged with Child Neglect with Great Bodily Harm.
According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, on May 14, a 2-year-old boy was found by his mother in his bed unresponsive and appeared to be having a seizure.
EMS responded and the child was transported to the hospital for treatment.
MCSO was notified and an investigation was initiated about the possible overdose. The investigation led to arrest warrants against Lapek and Barendse after cocaine and marijuana were found in the toddler's system.
Both suspects were arrested without incident on Wednesday. The child has been released from the hospital.
