BRADENTON, Fla. -- Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol say a 32-year-old man crashed into an 80-year-old grandmother while she was getting her mail outside her Bradenton home.

Gloria Slowiak is recovering after two surgeries at Blake Medical Center, according to her family.

"Surprisingly, her spirits are up and I mean, she’s a fighter," said her son, John. "It kills me to see her in the pain that she’s in and I can’t do anything about it other than do whatever I can to help bring the suspect to justice."

According to the FHP, the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta -- later identified as Daniel Kersey -- collided into Slowiak's golf cart while she was retrieving her mail.

Investigators say Kersey ran off the road, knocking over a neighbor's palm tree.

Witnesses report the driver got out of the car and ran away.

It happened December 27 at Eighth Street East approaching 49th Avenue Drive East.

"How do you hurt someone like that and then just walk away?" asked John Slowiak.

Kersey is now in custody and authorities charged with felony hit-and-run.
