BRADENTON, Fla. — Bradenton lifeguard Richard Steinfirst has reached a new milestone. He’s the oldest certified lifeguard in Florida.
“I turned eighty-five a few weeks ago,” said Steinfirst.
He started life guarding in the 50’s in New Jersey and he’s been teaching Manatee County children how to swim since 2003.
"I swim everyday five-hundred yards, I try to stay healthy, I do everything as well as I can,” said Steinfirst.
He's about four times older than most of his coworkers, but that doesn’t stop him from doing the job.
“At first my thoughts were eighty-five and a lifeguard can he really do that, but he can out swim me any day,” said lifeguard Ryan Gagliano.
Steinfirst said he wants to lifeguard a few more years.
“I think I’ve got two or three more years if I try,” said Steinfirst.
