Developers want to convert old jail into apartments

Commissioners are considering the idea

BRADENTON, Fla. — Bradenton developers are looking at a plan to convert the old jail into affordable housing units. It’s estimated the jail could be converted into about eighty units.

“I love the idea it’s just sitting there and it’s 80,000 square feet,” said resident Johnette Isham.

The jail is connected to the current courthouse, so administrators would have to sign off on a safety plan first. County commissioners approved exploring the idea this week.

Cassandra burns is a working-class millennial. She said it’s hard to find a place to live in downtown Bradenton.

"Trying to find an apartment or a place to live, it’s not an easy search,” said Burns.

County commissioners should hear more about the plan later this year.
