Hurricane Florence evacuees hunker down on Anna Maria Island

ANNA MARIA, Fla. — Dozens of Hurricane Florence evacuees are hunkering down on Anna Maria Island.

Nancy Woodworth left her coastal North Carolina home and says she's been checking the news every hour, “because of the stress of knowing that there were people who stayed behind and the stress of knowing oh my god what is happening,” said Woodworth.

Some evacuees said communication between friends and family back home is tough because hundreds of thousands are without power.

Erik Hunsinger is trying to get an update on his home. "I’ve been watching all the stations, I just want to make sure my house isn’t destroyed,” said Hunsinger.

Both evacuees said they plan to spend the weekend in Florida, then head to the Carolinas on Wednesday.

“If we can’t get up there and access back into town then we will probably come back here,” said Woodworth.
