POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- The Polk County Public Schools has postponed fall sports amid coronavirus concerns.

The school district announced on social media that it will push back the first day of practice for football, girls volleyball, cross country, swim and dive, and golf. The original start date for fall sports was Monday, July 27.

Student-athletes are still allowed to participate in physical conditioning drills, Polk Schools said on social media.

“We’re delaying the start of all fall sport practices to further evaluate the situation,” said Dan Talbot, the district's Senior Coordinator of Athletics in a statement on social media. “We will be working closely with our surrounding counties to develop a plan to safely return to fall sport practices and competitions. We will keep everyone updated as soon as that information becomes available.”

Officials have not released the new date for when fall sports can officially begin in Polk County.

The announcement comes shortly after Hillsborough County Schools announced it will push back the start of fall sports to Monday, August 10.
