A Polk County man was shot and killed by deputies after they say he stabbed his 62-year-old mother.

Authorities say Phillip Dibenedetto, 36, stabbed his mother, who is now in the hospital with serious injuries following the stabbing.

It happened in the SE Winter Haven unincorporated area Wednesday morning.

According to Sheriff Grady Judd, Dibenedetto asked his mother if there was any coffee, and when she turned around he stabbed her in the chest.

She was able to get to another apartment and call 911.

Deputies arrived on scene, and as they were searching for the suspect, he was reportedly yelling "kill me, kill me."

He said things like he meant to stab his mother in the throat, "today is the day I die," and "shoot me here."

A taser was deployed on him at one point when he tried to retreat back to his apartment. But then he reached his gun and fired at deputies on scene.

Deputies returned fire and killed Dibenedetto. Three deputies were directly involved, but none were injured.

Sheriff Judd said his deputies did everything they could to try to end the situation peacefully.

Judd said the man confessed during negotiations that he was planning to do this and bought a gun last week for this specific reason.
