Lakeland Police arrest more than 30 people New Year's Eve weekend

LAKELAND, Fla. — The Lakeland Police Department made over 30 arrests in their "Street Safe" initiative over the New Year's Eve weekend.

Authorities say 33 people in total were arrested for things varying from possession of illegal drugs to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The police department says 20 officers were positioned around Downtown Lakeland bars, restaurants and gas stations, as well as along Memorial Boulevard from December 28 to December 31 between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m.

In addition to the arrests police recovered 13 firearms, including two AR15 type rifles.

“I’m proud of the work these officers did over the weekend. Many of them left their families and rearranged their holiday plans to participate in this safety initiative," Lakeland Police Chief Larry Giddens said. "My top priority is the safety and security of our citizens and all those who visit our great City.”

Notably, police arrested two wanted subjects during traffic stops and a convicted felon in possession of a stolen 9mm Glock. They safe traffic stops also led to arrests for possession of cocaine, marijuana, MDMA and drug paraphernalia.
