LAKELAND, Fla. — Two people are dead after a murder-suicide in Polk County, deputies say.

Deputies responded to a home located in the 2300 block of 10th Street West in Lakeland around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived on scene, they located a deceased male and an injured female.

Authorities say 40-year-old Antero Araujo Quintana shot his wife, 42-year-old Beatriz Araujo, then shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife was critically injured but later died at the hospital.

According to preliminary investigation, the shooting was witnessed by their 21-year-old son. The two other children were waiting in the family truck during an argument. Witnesses say the couple had been arguing for several days and were preparing to take their kids trick-or-treating when the last argument began.

"It's absolutely heartbreaking that these children will have this awful memory of a day that should have been filled with good memories," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "For the rest of us, it's a sad reminder of the human tragedy of domestic violence."
