POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A 5-year-old boy has died after a crash in Polk County Sunday.

Florida Highway Patrol said around 1:30 a.m., a vehicle was traveling southbound on SR-544, north of Avenue Y NE, crossed the center line and collided head-on with another vehicle.

FHP said the driver of the vehicle that was hit, a 70-year-old man, was killed at the scene.

Two boys, a 5 and 8-year-old, were passengers with the 27-year-old driver who crossed the center line.

The 5-year-old was taken to a local hospital and later died from his injuries, FHP said. The 8-year-old is in critical condition.

FHP said alcohol impairment is a factor in the crash. Charges are pending for the 27-year-old driver.
