POLK COUNTY, Fla. --- One person is dead after a crash on US Hwy 27 in Polk County.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said they are investigating the crash that happened on US Hwy 27 at Central Grove Road in Davenport.

Officials said the two-vehicle crash happened around 5:53 p.m. They said 54-year-old Jose Febo-Collazo died from his injuries, and 52-year-old Sandra Mendez-Pagan was transported to a local hospital.

Mendez-Pagan is in stable condition.

Witnesses say Febo-Callazo stopped at a stop sign on Central Grove Road, but then proceeded onto the highway into the path of Mendez-Pagan.

Mendez-Pagan struck Febo-Callazo's driver side door and both vehicles spun. His car then began burning.

He was extracted from the vehicle and taken to the hospital, but he later died from his injuries.

Southbound Hwy 27 was shutdown at California Blvd. for four hours after the crash.
