The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is about to get more colorful.

The underside columns and bridge profile will be lit up with color changeable LED lights in a new project from FDOT.

A total of 1,824 lighting fixtures will be installed varying between 48 and 205 watts each.

The wide faces of all columns will be illuminated by floodlighting fixtures mounted to the underside of the deck and box girders, washing along the height of each column, fading out as it gets toward the water line.

Along the length of the main span and high level approaches, “necklace” lights will be mounted on brackets that allow the fixtures to be directed straight out.

The construction is set to be completed in Fall of 2019.

FDOT calls the lighting project a unique enhancement, unlike any other in the world and says the project will stand for the Tampa Bay region as an inspiration for residents and all who visit.

Different color patterns available include patriotic, fireworks, water waves, sunset-sunrise, majestic, warm gateway, elegant sparkle, and verdant green.

The primary purpose of the project is aesthetic lighting, but there is a secondary benefit of added safety and security as the bridge underside is currently very dark.
