School resource officer uses taser to control female student during fight at middle school

Posted

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A middle school student was tasered after refusing to comply with the commands of a school resource officer during a fight Thursday afternoon.

During dismissal for Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School several students were boarding their school buses when a fight broke out between two female students in the bus circle area of the school.

According to officials, a Pinellas Park Police School Resource Officer assigned to the middle school attempted to break up the fight.

One of the girls involved continued to fight the other student and was refusing to comply with the commands being giver to her by the officer. Despite continuous commands, the girl then started physically resisting the officer. She then verbally threatened to hit the officer and attempted to run away. That's when the officer used his taser on the girl to gain control of the situation and detain her.

Officials say the other student involved in the fight managed to get on her school bus and leave campus. She was later identified. At this time, the school resource officer is working with school staff to determine if any disciplinary or criminal charges will be placed on her.

Paramedics were called to the school to medically clear the student who was tasered. They said she only suffered minor injuries as a result of the fight.

She was released to the custody of her mother at the school and criminal charges are being referred to the State Attorney's Office.
