DUNEDIN, Fla. — Dunedin is taking steps toward giving golf carts access to roads in nearly their entire community.

Thursday is the first reading of an ordinance amendment that could make the city go from 50% to more than 90% golf cart friendly.

The new proposed amendment would add several more golf cart zones and crossings including a legal crossing of SR-580 at Bass Boulevard using a traffic signal.

Since the early 1980s Dunedin golf cart zones have been expanding, but this proposal is the biggest.

Supporters say the overall intention is to make it cheaper for residents to get around.

The first reading is Thursday night at Dunedin city hall at 6 p.m.
