LARGO, Fla. -- A 93-year-old man wants to give his $1,200 stimulus check to someone in need. Virgil Sweet is asking for you to send him a letter and tell him why you need it.
"We got along very well last year. I earned $50,000. We got everything we needed, and everything we wanted. So when I saw the money there, I said 'That needs to go to someone who really needs it,'" said Sweet.
Sweet is asking the people who need that money to write him a letter and tell him why they need it. He says he will read the letters on May 22 and then decide who will get the $1,200. On May 25, Sweet says he will give that person twelve $100 bills.
"It’s going to depend on the individual but I know there are a lot of people out there who need it, and those are the ones that I would like to hear from," said Sweet.
Sweet says he hopes other people hear what he's doing and are inspired to give as well.
"I hope this is a chain reaction and we have a lot of people donate their money," said Sweet.
He says he will send the letters on to other people who are interested in helping others.
"So hopefully I'm going to get a lot of letters from those who need it, and a lot of letters from those who don't need it," said Sweet.
Sweet says if you'd like to send him a letter about why you or someone you know needs the money, mail it to the following address before May 18:
