16-year-old arrested after accidentally shooting 9-year-old with stolen gun

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A 16-year-old was arrested after officials say he accidentally shot his 9-year-old nephew Friday.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said at about 1:45 p.m., deputies responded to the Red Roof Inn at 4999 49th Street North in Unincorporated St. Pete.

When deputies arrived, they saw a 9-year-old boy who had been shot.

According to witnesses, 16-year-old Treyvon Maynor was handling a firearm in the hotel room - the firearm was later determined to be stolen.

While he was holding the firearm, it accidentally discharged and hit the 9-year-old boy in the arm.

After the shooting, Maynor fled the scene and discarded the firearm.

He was then found nearby and witnesses were able to identify him as the suspect.

Maynor was charged with felon in possession of a firearm, grant theft of a firearm and violation of probation for burglary.

He was transported to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center.

The 9-year-old boy was transported to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital with not life-threatening injuries.

This is still an ongoing investigation.
