13-year-old in St. Pete facing arson charges for setting backpack on fire at school

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 13-year-old boy has been arrested in St. Petersburg after he set a backpack on fire at school, according to police.

St. Pete Police say the seventh grader at John Hopkins Middle School started the fire in a bathroom stall just before 12:30 p.m.

Fire rescue responded and put the fire out. Police say it caused minimal damage but produced a lot of smoke, leading to the evacuation of the school.

No one was injured.
