LAND O' LAKES, Fla. — The Land O’ Lakes Rec Center camp is so popular, parents line up for hours on registration day.
“All the way down to Collier Parkway usually. And past going down Collier Parkway toward the library. People waiting in line," said Cindy Szappan with the Pasco Parks and Recreation Department.
Pasco County offers ten summer camps at several parks and rec centers from New Port Richey to Dade City.
Officials say compared to privately run camps, they are very affordable— prices in Pasco range from $35 to $65 a week depending on the location.
“I think our opportunity that we offer is great because it is lower and it is a great camp program. We do keep them active. We keep them off their devices as much as we possibly can," siad Szappan.
Those low prices are why the camps are in such demand.
Over the years, parents have endured long hours and the elements to register for county and city camps around Tampa Bay.
Now Pasco County is following the lead of many others and putting the system completely online.
Registration begins April 6 at 10 am. Just like trying to grab tickets to a concert, it’s first come first serve.
“They should be able to do it right from their home. They are going to be able to log in their pajamas if they want to and pick and choose the weeks that they need and pay for those weeks and be done," said Szappan.
Camp officials say its best to set up your online profile before registration day so you don’t have any delays.
Space is limited.
The camp at the Land O’Lakes rec center usually has a waiting list of around of about 100 kids.
