WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. — A man in Pasco County was arrested Tuesday morning after he ran into multiple parking poles at Wiregrass Elementary, according to arrest documents.
Joshua Starr, 39, was dropping off a 7-year-old child when the incident happened, authorities say. He told them he was reaching back to grab the child's backpack when his vehicle hit the poles.
Documents show he hit at least three of the yellow poles, which separate the paved parking lot from a sidewalk.
Deputies say Starr was unsteady on his feet, had glassy eyes and slurred speech. He preformed poorly on field sobriety tests and had a breath alcohol content of 0.239 percent and 0.248 percent, according to arrest documents.
The child told deputies Starr was "walking into walls" that morning. He also told them he was thrown forward and hit his head on the seat when Starr hit the poles, according to documents.
Deputies say Starr was wearing a soiled bathrobe and sitting in the front of the car when they arrived on the scene. He told them he took a 1mg Xanax an hour before the incident, according to documents. He told deputies he hadn't had a drink in 12 hours, documents show.
He was arrested for child neglect and driving under the influence.
