PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Interstate 75 was shut down for more than eight hours Thursday after a pedestrian was hit and killed around 5 a.m.
Florida Highway Patrol said a man and his son were traveling south on I-75 near milepost 274 when the Ford Expedition they were in broke down. The Expedition was driven to the shoulder of the road when it stopped.
Troopers said the pair were "impaired" and got out of the Expedition. At that point, the man tried to cross I-75 on foot.
FHP said the man was hit by a van, an SUV, and then a pickup truck in successive order. All of the vehicles that hit the man came to a controlled stop on the interstate. The man died at the scene from his injuries.
The crash closed the southbound lanes of I-75 at State Road 56 from 5 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
