LAND O' LAKES, Fla. — Detectives in Pasco County searched the Land O' Lakes jail for drugs Friday morning after an inmate was found dead of a suspected overdose.
The inmate, 28-year-old Colton McKinley, was found unresponsive in his cell around 7:15 a.m. Friday morning. Authorities say he was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m.
Four doses of Narcan were used by medical personnel in the jail to try and save McKinley. Narcan is a drug used to treat an overdose in an emergency situation,
The Pasco-Pinellas Medical Examiner's Office will determine an actual cause of death. Authorities say it could take up to six weeks for toxicology tests.
Deputies say the investigation is part of five overdose incidents involving methamphetamine that have occurred recently at the jail.
Detectives are trying to determine how the drugs got into the facility and preliminary investigation indicates that the inmate or inmates may have smuggled the substance in by concealing it in a body cavity, according to a press release. There is no evidence to suggest that the drugs were brought in by an employee, according to officials.
McKinley was arrested on December 7, 2018 for scheme to defraud, possessing forged bills and uttering forged notes.
