CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater homicide detectives are conducting a death investigation after two people were found dead at Shephard's Beach Resort.

Clearwater Police responded to the resort located at 619 S. Gulfview Boulevard around 1:29 p.m. Tuesday.

"As I was driving, I noticed about four police cars out here along with the fire department. I think there was a paramedic truck out here as well. It was pretty busy," said Clearwater resident Joe Moralobo.

Officers found the bodies of Jeffrey Little, 55, and Melissa Little, 50, of New Port Richey inside a second-floor room at the hotel. Homicide detectives believe Jeffrey shot and killed Melissa, then killed himself. The two had checked into the hotel on Monday.

"I moved here about a year ago from California. I use to come and stay at Shephard's every summer. I never had a problem here, it's a wonderful place, wonderful beach," said Moralobo.

Shephard's Beach Resort released the following statement on Wednesday afternoon:

"We extend the deepest gratitude to local law enforcement officers and emergency responders who reacted quickly and efficiently to the incident. Their professionalism in dealing with this very challenging situation should be commended and we have the utmost confidence in them to keep our beach safe.
We will continue to support law enforcement in the wake of this tragic incident. During that time, we are giving assurance to our patrons that business at Shephard’s Beach Resort will continue as usual and will not be interrupted. We remain committed to creating an environment of enjoyment, relaxation, and fun for all our hotel guests."
