CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater Police is warning residents about an IRS phone scam that has been on the rise in the past several days. In that time, the department says it has received about 50 inquiries about the calls.

The calls appear to be from a 518 area code and say the person owes the IRS money, and that they will be taken to jail unless they pay money.

Detectives want residents to know the Internal Revenue Service will not call you to ask for money and threaten to throw you in jail.

You should not give any personal information or any information at all to these callers, nor should you give them any money.

Detectives say the best advice they have is to not answer numbers you don't know. If you do and think it's a scam, you can call the Clearwater Police Department fraud hotline at 727-562-4424.
