TAMPA, Fla. -- A Tampa service member finds a new way to honor his fallen brothers and sisters.
Petty Officer First Class Randall Kopytowski started running while carrying the American flag on Memorial Day.
He ran four miles every four hours.
On Monday, he ran at Ben T. Davis Beach and along the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
He continued running on Tuesday.
"The whole point is just to remember each individual, each hero by name and never forget them," said Kopytowski.
Kopytowski has served nearly 13 years in the Navy. He is stationed at MacDill Air Force Base.
He wanted to run 48 miles to remember fallen service members.
After his run on Tuesday night, he was admitted to the hospital for dehydration. He is expected to be okay after some fluids and medication.
"Everything they went through, everything they gave up, all the dreams, their families and everything they did so we could be here," he said.
He created a Facebook page called, "Miles for Military Heroes." He asked the public for the names of fallen service members and he runs for them.
"While we may think about the fallen service members one day a year, their friends and families never forget," said Kopytowski.
Kopytowski said he encourages people to remember our fallen service members more than once a year.
"We shouldn't be honoring our fallen service members once a year, it should be something we always thing about," he said.
Kopytowski plans to finish the last few miles on Wednesday.
"It's been a very emotional and humbling experience," he said.
