TAMPA, Fla. -- A prominent Tampa Bay philanthropist has died.
David Straz Jr. has died in his sleep during a recent fishing trip with close friends, according to the philanthropist's foundation. Straz was 77.
Straz ran for the mayor of Tampa in 2019 before losing to former TPD Chief Jane Castor.

Mayor Castor released the following statement following Straz's death:
“I’m saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Straz... David’s indelible contributions to this city will be a part of our cultural fabric for decades to come. My heart goes out to the entire family during this very difficult time."
Judith Lisi, the president and CEO of the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts said in a statement that David Straz's commitment to the community was beyond compare.

“David’s commitment to and love of the performing arts and of this community was beyond compare and we cannot thank him enough for the impact he has made on the lives of so many. His philanthropic legacy will continue to live on our stages and inspire the hearts and minds of us all."
As of Monday night, funeral arrangements for Straz have not yet been announced.
