TAMPA, Fla. — Plant High School senior Spencer Brooks needed to log some community service hours for the school’s sailing team.
But he didn’t love his options.
“The suggestion I got was to do a trash pickup on the beach,” said Spencer. “But I really didn’t want to pick up other people’s trash. I want to help people.”
Spencer came up with a bold beautiful idea. He teamed up with Plant High’s sailing, golfing and fishing teams to host a day of bonding and fun with the school’s Best Buddies program for kids with special needs.
Best Buddies is a volunteer-based international program celebrating friendships and relationships with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Monday's event at the Davis Islands Yacht Club included fishing off the docks, sailing on the calm water and putt-putting on a makeshift green.
It was a smash hit with everybody.
“This is spectacular!” cheered one Best Buddies student as he sailed off into the beautiful day.
