HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- Several Tampa Bay seniors were no-shows at their graduation Thursday night, ditching the ceremony for the dugout.

"Everybody just kind of decided that this is an event that's worth missing graduation for," said Plant City High's Colton Miller.

Plant City seniors faced a schedule dilemma Thursday as the varsity baseball team took the field in Fort Myers to play in the school's first state title game.

“The fans are just an extension of the team," said Miller. "Everybody’s loud, everybody’s getting rowdy and just trying to get the boys hyped up on the field.”

Miller and a couple dozen grads drove south to watch the championship game, wearing their caps and gowns in the stands.

"This is our graduation, watching them perform in the state finals," said Miller.

Plant City defeated opponent, and fellow Hillsborough County schools, Strawberry Crest 3-1.
