TAMPA, Fla. — One person is dead, and two others were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a shooting in Tampa Wednesday afternoon.
According to Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw, around 12:45 p.m., Tampa Police got a call of shots fired inside a home on the 10000 block of N. 23rd Street. When officers arrived, TPD said they saw two victims of a shooting running outside a house screaming for help.
Police said the suspect, identified as Michael Banks, 42, then began to shoot at the officers at the scene. Chief Bercaw said officers shot back at the suspect, but he wasn't hit. He was then taken into custody.
TPD said officers went through the home, and that's when they found someone dead inside. Chief Bercaw said in this case, the suspect and victims knew each other.
"This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with all the victims in this case," said Bercaw.
The suspect will be charged at a later date, but police said he had a violent criminal history, including spending time in prison for aggravated battery of a pregnant female and battery on a person over 65.
Alysha Maitland captured video of the incident as it unfolded. She said she pulled up when she saw police cars, so she ran inside.
“The next thing I know, I hear boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, just a bunch of shots being fired, and in the video, you can hear my mom saying, 'Alysha, get down, get down,' and my daughter’s in the background getting scared, and she’s like, 'Stay down on the ground,' and I had to army crawl to shut our back door because I didn’t know what was happening," said Maitland. "It was very terrifying."
