TAMPA, Fla. — The first Monday in May is designated as Melanoma Monday to promote early detection of skin cancer.
Several Tampa Bay area hospitals and dermatologists are offering free skin cancer screenings as part of Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
In the United States, 80,442 new cases of Melanomas of the skin were reported in 2015 and nearly nine thousand people died from this deadly cancer, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In Florida, 6,484 Melanoma cases were reported that year.
The hospitals offering free skin cancer screenings are:
• Morton Plant Hospital: Cheek-Powell Heart and Vascular Pavilion, 455 Pinellas St., Clearwater, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• South Florida Baptist Hospital: Community Health Resource Room, 301 N. Alexander St., Plant City, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Winter Haven Hospital: Main Lobby 200 Ave. F N.E., Winter Haven, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The events are free and open to the public, but registration is required. To register, go to BayCareEvents.org or call 844-343-1769. Screenings will be limited to exposed skin only. If screeners detect an abnormality, the individual will be directed to follow up with his or her dermatologist.
