TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa International Airport is opening its Customs and Border Protection operation back up as more international flights are added.
Thursday marked the return of non-stop flights between Tampa and Cancun with Jet Blue Airlines.
The flight had less than 20 people giving customs agents more time to do more extensive screening.
International flights have been extremely limited since the pandemic hit. At its lowest point, TPA was down 97% of normal business.
Now, officials say it's back to about 40% of what they normally do this time of year.
Along with daily flights to and from Cancun, Tampa will bring in a flight from Havana next week.
Airport officials say they are in talks to add more international travel including trips to Panama City and England.
