HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A 14-month investigation ended in the recovery of thousands of pieces of jewelry, perfumes and personal belongings stolen throughout Hillsborough County.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office tells ABC Action News at least 1,500 pieces of jewelry were recovered from a burglary trend targeting residents in Westchase, Carrollwood and Citrus Park. The cases date as far back as 2016.

Investigators said Gilberto Vazquez broke into homes through sliding glass doors, open windows and side doors. Victims of the robberies told us he reportedly then used personal belongings like pillow cases to steal jewelry and heirlooms.

For victims like Joanne, this moment was worth the wait in the investigation. She was robbed in August, shortly after she moved to Tampa. Her wedding ring is gone but she did find personal heirlooms.

“I carried this rosary in my hand when I got married,” she said while pointing to a small bag.

Investigators said Vazquez could be connected to over 30 burglaries, totaling more than half a million dollars in stolen goods. They believe he sent some items to Massachusetts to be sold. He was found and arrested in Massachusetts and is awaiting extradition.

If you were burglarized and recognize any of the items, please contact the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office.
