LAKE PLACID, Fla. — Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol are trying to determine the cause of a head-on collision that claimed four lives on Christmas Day in Lake Placid.
According to a FHP report, the crash occurred just after noon on State Road 70, northeast of the Highlands-Glades county line. Investigators say a Buick of unknown make was traveling west in the eastbound lane as it attempted to pass another vehicle.
A 2006 Toyota Exterra driven by 56-year-old Judy Mounts of Port St. Lucie was traveling east when her vehicle was struck head-on by the Buick. Mounts and her 16-year-old passenger, Destiny Franz of North Fort Myers, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Buick burst into flames killing both occupants, who have not been identified.
The roadway was closed for over six hours. Tt re-opened just after 7:30 pm.
The investigation continues.
