Hardee County hit-and-run critically injures 82-year-old motorcyclist, suspect sought

HARDEE COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol is searching for the driver of a white Dodge Ram that they say hit an 82-year-old motorcyclist on Saturday in Hardee County.

FHP says the driver of the truck attempted to cross the southbound lanes of US 17 at the intersection of Morales Road when they violated 82-year-old James Berry's right of way. FHP says the truck was traveling from the parking lot of "La Tienda De Los Primos," which is located at 1915 US 17.

It happened around 5 p.m.

The front of Berry's motorcycle hit the left side of the Dodge. Berry, of Winter Haven, was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital with critical injuries.

The driver ran from the scene and went northbound on US 17, FHP says.

The driver of the Dodge was described by witnesses as a Hispanic male. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 239-938-1800 or Crimestoppers.
