United Way of Hernando County's Stuff the Bus school supply drive to help teachers and parents

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — The new school year starts in about one month which puts many families in a financial hole.

Hernando County Schools says over 60% of parents struggle to buy supplies for their children. And almost 94% of teachers buy items out of pocket to stock their classrooms.

You can help out by donating back-to-school supplies to the United Way of Hernando County.

The non-profit organization is holding a 3-day Stuff the Bus school supply drive July 12 to 14.

Some of the most needed items are as follows:

  • Backpacks
  • Computer notebooks
  • Calculators
  • Colored pencils
  • Construction paper
  • Copy paper
  • Crayons
  • Dictionaries/Thesaurus
  • Dry erase markers
  • Erasers
  • File folders
  • Glue bottles
  • Glue sticks
  • Highlighters
  • Index cards
  • Markers
  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Scissors
  • Sprial notebooks
  • Wide/college ruled paper

Over 200 Stuff the Bus volunteers will be collecting the supplies 11:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the following ten locations throughout Hernando County:

Publix stores

  • Avalon: 13455 County Line Rd

  • Brooksville Square: 19390 Cortez Blvd
  • Glen Lakes: 9595 Commercial Way
  • Hernando West: 1400 Pinehurt Dr
  • Lakewood Plaza: 4365 Commercial Way

  • Seven Hills: 160 Mariner Blvd

Walmart stores

If you are running short on time to purchase school supplies you can still help out by buying a gift card and dropping it off at the Stuff the Bus location. Volunteers will then shop for supplies using the gift card.
