Deputies in South Carolina said they arrested a man for allegedly leaving threatening telephone messages at the Darlington Raceway.

According to the Darlington County Sheriff's Office , 46-year-old Michael Avin was charged with possession, threatening or attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction for an act of terrorism, not resulting in death.

Investigators stated Avin allegedly left the threatening messages on April 27, the news release said.

Avin also told investigators that he'd written a letter stating he had access to 125 tons of bomb-making materials, investigators stated in the news release.

NASCAR is set to race at Darlington Raceway on Sunday.

Officials said in the news release that Avin is in custody at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center, and is awaiting a bond hearing.
