The iPhone upgrade nightmare is over.
Apple released a new software update for the iPhone late Thursday. It fixes a bug that left many iPhone users unable to make phone calls.
The botched update, called iOS 8.0.1, was pulled just hours after it debuted Wednesday morning. iPhone 6 users who downloaded it were given complex steps to uninstall it Thursday morning. That stopgap required a computer with iTunes.
The definitive fix is called iOS 8.0.2 and can be installed using the instructions below:
The release of iOS 8 coincided with the unveiling of the iPhone 6 on Sept. 19. It can also be installed on some older iPhones: the 4S, 5, 5C and 5S.
The iPhone's software glitches occurred after reports that the iPhone 6 Plus – the largest variety of the iPhone 6 – can develop a bend in its aluminum frame. Demonstration videos showed the weak point to be near the volume buttons.
A spokesperson at Apple could not be reached for comment.
